Travel: My tips for a holiday on Kos

As you may know, I went to Kos a couple of weeks ago and I promised to write a post with a few of my tips for when going to the beautiful island. I've picked the three things I enjoyed most while I was on the island.

Depending on where you're staying on Kos you will need a car to go to these places. We stayed near Kos city and had a bike for the week. One day we hired a car and that's when we saw a lot more of the island.

Renting a car was very affordable for us as we were with a group of five students and we split the costs.

Youtube: Jacksgap - The Rainbow Centre

Hi guys!

My weeks are crazy busy at the moment. I'm working 3 days a week, going to uni 3 days a week, I have tons of deadlnes to meet and studying to do (finals are just around the corner). Needless to say I'm super tired every morning when my alarm goes off. One thing that helps me wake up (besides from my loving father bringing me a cup of tea.. I'm spoiled rotten) is checking if any of my favorite YouTubers have uploaded a video I haven't seen yet.

A few days ago I woke up to seeing the latest Jacksgap video. He and his family went to Sri Lanka and together with his brother he spent christmas with The Rainbow Centre, a school providing education and support for children living in extreme poverty. I hadn't heard of The Rainbow Centre before, but I think it's such a great initiative. The boys made an awesome video of their days there, that really touched me. To increase awareness, I decided to share this video on my blog.

Have a look and tell me what you think of it.

Back on track.

Hi guys!

I'm back from all of my travels and have started school and working again. I've really missed working the last couple of months. Being back from traveling also means being back on the blog!

Follow the jump for details and pictures of both trips :)

Life: Too much of nothing.

Hi guys, yes that's a Spice Girls reference in the titel.

How are you all? I'm so happy the weather is finally getting better her in Amsterdam (except for the 24hrs of rain yesterday) and my trips are right around the corner. Uni has been crazy though. We Monday a week ago with the final period of this year and we already had to hand in two documents.

I think that all the writing I had to do for school resulted in me being really bad at blogging the past weeks. I haven't got any thoughts to blog about and the little free time I had was spent watching interviews with Victoria Beckham (I've just discovered that she isn't a stuck up and stiff, she's actually smart and funny) and going on a mouse hunt with my dad.

We've unfortunately got ourselves a little intruder. I have named him Mickey.. 'cause I'm original like that. We've bought 4 cruelty free mouse traps and I can't wait to release him (far away from our house) onto a field. If only he would fall for it and go for the snacks we laid out for him. I'm keeping my fingers crossed he'll go for the bait before I'm going away for almost 2 weeks.

Unfortunately I haven't started at my new job yet so my life has been quite boring lately. Not earning  money also means that everything I've been doing has been pretty lowbudget and that quickly got boring. I'm starting with the job in the second week of May. I.Can't.Wait!

For now all I can say is that I hope to be back soon with inspiration to blog (& I will be!).

xx

Sunday Smiles #5

Hey guys,

Hope you've had an amazing week. I've been so busy with exams the past week that I haven't spent much time online at all. I did however select a few things that made me laugh this week to share with you.

Skincare #2

Hi!

My last skin care post was focused on the products that made a difference to my skin (for the better!). This time I want to tell you how adjusting my diet has helped me fighting acne. As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm not acne free but it is a whole lot better.

There are people who have a serious sweet tooth or a stronger preference for savoury snacks and then you have the unfortunate group of people who like them both. Yes, you've guessed it.. I belong to the third group.
I can have the most intense craving for chocolate and a day later the only thing on my mind are salt and vinegar crisps. Until a few months ago I used to give in to these cravings. I would single-handedly destroy a bag of crisps or the biggest chocolate bar out there. Always resulting in a state of self disappointment and most of all: new acne popping up the days after. I learnt this the hard way but I'll come to that in a bit.

At the end of 2012 I started to educate myself more on the effects of food on the skin. I think I have read every skin care and food related post on Annie Jaffrey and in addition I spent a good amount of time doing some research myself. I then started to minimise the amounts of sugar and unhealthy fats I consumed. That basically meant: no chocolate, muffins/other baked treats and no crisps or french fries etc. I did that for a while and I noticed my already existing acne was getting less and I didn't get that much new spots. After a month or so I had a bit of a relapse and this is when I learnt the hard way: I ate a bag (200gr) of caramel filled chocolate eggs over a course of two days. A day or two later I woke up with several new acne spots and a much oilier skin than I just got
used to.

During my little skin care research project I read about the positive effects beetroot juice can have for scars and acne. Beetroot is full of vitamins, potassium, and iron. It is an antioxidant and inflammatory vegetable known as a super food because of its ability to purify the blood and eliminating harmful toxins that cause acne. Therefore, beetroot juice can be used as a treatment to rejuvenate skin cells and healing blemishes*.
Unfortunately it was impossible to find beetroot juice in Barcelona under €11,- but as soon as I was back in Amsterdam I went to the supermarket and for a bit more than €2,- bargain!

As it is quite a strong juice I started with 50ml a day and after every week I added another 50ml. I soon saw a big difference: my acne scars and spots weren't as red anymore, they were a light pink. I've been drinking beetroot juice on a semi-daily basis now and some of the scars I've had for years have disappeared.

I can definitely say that refined sugars (chocolate, cookies, ice cream, doughnuts) and unhealthy fat (crisps, french fries, doughnuts) influence my skin in a bad way and so I try to stay away from them without depriving myself. If I really want some chocolate I let myself have a piece of milk or dark chocolate. The higher the percentage of cocoa the better.

I have read a lot of things about dairy being bad for the skin, but I can't say anything on that subject. I never have regular milk as it contains a lot of hormones humans don't need and I strongly dislike the taste as well, I usually go for soy or almond milk. I also prefer the taste of soy yogurt over regular yogurt. Same goes for wheat I can't say much about wheat. It can cause acne, some people react very strong to wheat. As I always get very bloated I try to eat as little wheat products as possible and when I do eat it I opt for whole grain rice and pasta (a lot lower in sugar but higher in fibers = good!).

As this is already a long post, I will talk about the things I can eat without worsening my acne in the 3rd post about skin care. For now I'll finish with some tips:

- Drink lots of water throughout the day.
- Try green tea, it's inflammatory.
- To lessen the appearance of acne scars, drink 1 glass beetroot juice a day*.
- Eat fruit and vegetables every day (if you forget -like me- to actually eat fruit, make a green monster!)
- To see to which foods you're sensitive to,  try to eliminate: sugar, unhealthy fats, dairy and wheat one by one from your diet. Don't stop having them all at once, it'll be impossible to figure out what causes your acne.

Again, if you have any tips for me or other suffering from acne, leave them in the comment section below.

xx

* Beetroot juice side effects:

''Before you jump into beet juice acne home remedy treatment, it's always a good idea to look at any possible side effects.

You should avoid the overuse of beet juice as it may lead to a condition called methemoglobinemia, which causes the blood cells to lose oxygen-carrying capacity.

In addition, consuming large amounts of beet or beet juice may cause low level of calcium in the bloodstream (hypocalcemia) and possible kidney problems (if you prone to calcium oxalate stone formation) because of its high oxalate content.

Take note that eating beet or drinking beet juice can temporarily discolor your stools or cause your urine or to turn red or pink in color (beeturia). This is a harmless side effect and nothing to be worried about.'' - source

A random list of things that make me happy.

On many blogs I've seen all kinds of lists. Lists of things that make people happy, gratitude lists and the 25 facts about me tag (and also a list!). As I always enjoy reading this type of blog post I decided to come up with a list (ha!) of things that make me happy combined with some facts about me. I hope you enjoy.

Photo's in the collage:
- Do not worry tea mug, it's huuuge (I guess 1/2L) which is perfect for a tea addict like me! I also love the illustrations.
- A drink with friends at one of my favorite bars in Amsterdam.
- A bright lipstick (maybelline 422 coral tonic)
- The most yummy salad I've had in a long time.
- 2 pics taken in one of my favorite towns in the southern province called Zeeland.
- Home made banana ice cream
- A winter walk on the beach

Now on to the real list of this post!

Skincare #1

Hi lovelies!
Today I'm going to tell you about my skincare history and the products I'm currently using. I have an oily t-zone and normal to dry cheeks and I have struggled with acne ever since I was a teenager. I am 23 now and I can't say I'm acne free but my skin is a lot better then that it used to be.

Fashion Friday: Forever 21

Hello you lovely lot!

Usually spring is my favourite seasons but right now I'm not really feeling it. It's has been officially spring since the 21st of May, but I haven't noticed it at all with daytime temperatures just above 0 and at night the barometer easily hits -3. If it's warmer where you are, consider yourself very lucky! :-) That being said, I haven't given up all hope for spring yet and when one of my friends asked if I wanted to order from Forever21 I said yes without thinking about it.

I'm pretty sure you all now the store, and if you don't please click on the link I've added to go to their website. I love Forever21 for clothes and I have bought multiple things from them in the past. We don't have a F21 in the Netherlands but there are rumours that they will open their doors here too. One can only hope. After having only ordered online, two years ago one of my besties and I decided to go to Antwerp for a shopping session in an actual Forever21 store. The crazy thing was that I had a really hard time finding stuff I liked. I had the same problem whenever I visited the store in Barcelona. Whereas whenever I shop online it's the complete opposite: I have a hard time staying within budget and I never had to send anything back because it didn't fit.

Anyways, long story short, here are the items I have ordered:

They're all pretty basic but I'm in desperate need for some new tee's. From left to right: A floral ombre t-shirt. Then three plain tee's in: Mint, coral and ivory. I also ordered the pretty white and blue floral shift dress (I'm quite the sucker for floral and blue). I also love the Forever21 blouses and more dressy tops but most of them are made of some sort synthetic fabric and I really can't stand that in warmer weather.

If you have a blog/youtube channel yourself and you have just ordered spring clothes, put the link in the comment section below, I love watching hauls.

Have a great weekend! xx

Sunday Smiles #3

Happy Sunday lovelies :)

I'd like to introduce you to my favourite motivational speaker:
Honestly. I think that this little boy could give an amazing TED talk on personal achievements. All kidding aside, I love this video and have watched it so many times. He genuinely makes me happy.

This just made me chuckle.

We've all been there.. If you haven't, I'd like the address of your hairdresser.

A Harry Potter reference. If this ever happens to me I will do the exact same thing. My dad won't ground me for it, he will probably think it's hilarious.

Hope you enjoyed it! Are you ready for the new week ahead? Any exciting things planned? I have exams, wish me luck!  xx

This Kid Went Beauty Shopping #2

Yesterday morning I had an appointment in the city and after that I decided to go to the MAC Cosmetics counter for an extra pair of 217 and 239 brushes. When I passed the Yves Rocher store I remembered a review I read on a popular Dutch beauty blog called Beautylab. Two new products from Yves Rocher were reviewed and I was curious to try them myself. I haven't tried them yet, so when I have I will write a blog post on how I got on.

For now, follow the jump to see the things I bought.

Life: Music of the moment.

Happy Monday everyone!

A couple of weeks ago I shared my love for British musician Ben Howard with you all. This time I want to do it a little different and share some of my favourite songs of the moment with you. I don't know about you, but I definitely have periods in which I listen to the same songs over and over until I find other songs. These are the songs I've listened to over the past couple of weeks (in no particular order).

1. Justin Timberlake - Mirrors
Justin Timberlake is back! He leaked his album The 20/20 Experience on Itunes last week and ever since that day I've been listening to Mirrors at least 5 times a day. While I really had to get used to the sound of Suit & Tie, Mirrors reminds me a lot of his old music, in a good way.

2. Passenger - Let Her Go
Mike Rosenberg, who is better known by his stage name Passenger, released his fifth album in 2012. I don't know why or how this happened but before a few weeks ago I had never heard of him. The first time I heard Let Her Go I was (a little tipsy) in a taxi. I did my best to remember parts of the lyrics but I failed miserably. The second time I heard it was in a McDonalds in Germany, and again I failed in remembering the lyrics. Last week I saw him on TV and recognised the song instantly, lucky me! I think it's such a beautiful song, perfect for girls after a break up who want to feel sorry for themselves (which is absolutely fine in my opinion, just don't feel like that for too long).

3. Passenger - Staring At The Stars
Same artist, different song. I must say that I don't like the intro of this song which is why I always fast forward 15 seconds. I love the lyrics as they're funny, motivational and a bit sad too. Listen to the song and let me know what you think about it :).

4. Ben Howard - Gracious
This is a sad but another beautiful song by the very talented Ben Howard. If you'd like to see the other blog post I did on his music click here.

5. Ellie Goulding - Figure 8
Figure 8 was the first song I listened to of Ellie Goulding's album Halcyon (2012). She has an amazing voice and I have enjoyed her music over the years. I really like this album but this has to be my favourite song on it. I honestly had it on repeat for 3 days in a row. My favourite part is when the beat kicks in, making the song a lot more powerful.

Have a great week everyone! Let's all make most of it :) xx

Sunday Smiles #2.

Hi guys! Welcome back to the second edition of Sunday Smiles!
This week I show you a few of my favourite moments of some of the tv series/movies I've watched over the years.

Saturday 16 March 2013

Comic Relief: Red Nose Day 2013

Even though I'm fully Dutch, I had quite an British upbringing and I grew up watching the BBC and also Comic Relief's Red Nose Day. Last night I watched the 25th edition and as always it made me cry throughout the night for two reasons:
1) The short films they show are so touching, heart breaking and very real, without overdoing it.
2) The comedy is just so good - I loved Jonathan Ross in a onesie.

Tuesday 12 March 2013

Foodie: Triple chocolate cookies.

On Monday I once again found myself in the kitchen baking a sweet treat. I decided to bake the triple chocolate cookies featured on vivannadoesmakeup's blog and in Tanya Burr's (pixi2woo on youtube) vlog. I thought they looked absolutely amazing and perfect for a girly weekend. Keeping in mind that I'm going to have a very girly weekend about a month from now, I decided to give them a try.

Make Up Monday: Favourite Lipsticks.

I'd like to dedicate the first blog post of the week to one of my favourite types of make up: Lipstick. I've picked my four most used items to show to you. I agree that four is a very random number, but these are the colours I like to wear the most.

Sunday Smiles #1.

Saturday 9 March 2013

A quick tip: How to find a colour that suits you.

I know a lot of people struggle with finding colours that complement their skin tone, I certainly struggled with this in the past (and sometimes still do).

I thought that the tips makeup artist Saige Maitri gave on Andreaschoice's youtube show were very helpful. I know what I'll pick up from the art store on my next visit!

Watch the video below to check them out.

Life: Interior design.

I truly enjoy looking at all the pretty images on weheartit.com, especially the interior design ones. Although I still live with my parents I like to fantasise about decorating my own place, even if it isn't as big as the images I love to look at.

I've taken a look at my most favourite images and I've discovered a pattern.
  •  I clearly love spaces with big windows, providing a lot  of natural light.
  •  I love fresh flowers. Roses and peonies are my favourites.
  •  Apart from white, I love soft colours.
  •  (I already knew this but) I've got a thing for chandeliers.

These are a few of my favourite pictures I've hearted on weheartit.com.

Foodie: Skinny Chicken Korma - SortedFood recipe.

A while ago I stumbled across the Feel Good Food show on the Bodytalk Daily youtube channel. The first episode I saw was when they made skinny chicken korma and after that I was hooked!

MAC Archie's Girls

Today MAC's Archie's Girls collection officially hit the stores in the Netherlands. It obviously has been inspired by the comic book series about Archie Giant and the two girls that are fighting for him: the blonde girl next door Betty and the vivacious Veronica with her beautiful long black hair.

This kid went beauty shopping.

Hi guys!

After a couple of very fun but also hectic and tiring days away for school I'm back home and ready for the weekend ;).

I'm never able to resist beauty shopping in foreign countries so it shouldn't have come as a surprise that I came home with a travel bag at least 3 kilos heavier than when I left.

Here come the pictures..

Life: Music

Hi guys :)

While I'm working on some new posts for the blog, I'd like to share some of my favourite songs by Ben Howard. He's incredible talented and the songs I'm about to share with you all remind me of bonfires (marshmallows included!) and good times on the beach.

Here it goes!

Old Pine

Only love
These waters

Hope you enjoy them just as much as I do.

Have a great week, xoxo.

Fitness: Greatness.

Last summer, in the middle of the Olympic crazyness I saw the (then) new Nike commercial on tv. I found it the most inspiring, true and motivational thing I had seen in a long time. Yesterday night after watching a few YouTube videos about fitness and health I thought of the Nike commercial again. I looked it up and when I found it I was reassured that ...

Tell the world I'm coming home.

My time away from home is almost over, only 4 days left to be more exact. It has been an amazing time and it boggles my mind how time can fly.

Saturday 5 January 2013

Men I would marry without a doubt.

#1 Harvey Specter.

Ok, so I know he's a completely fictional character but that doesn't stop me from linking him. Harvey Specter is one of the lead characters in Suits, a series about a law firm in New York. At the moment I'm quite obsessed with this show and I can't wait for the new episodes to come in 2 or 3 weeks. I like his storyline with Mike Ross and the witty conversations they have and I'm really curious on what will happen next.

Whenever I see him on pictures I go ''meh, not bad, not too good either'' but when I see him in the series I become such a fangirl.

I like him in his suit.

I like him in a casual outfit.

Who's your favorite fictional character you would marry without a doubt?

Travel: Before I Die.

I saw this ''tag'' on Tumblr and I had to share it on my blog. I love to travel and try to do it as often as possible. I do realize that being able to travel is something that isn't in the cards for everyone and I coun't myself lucky to have seen so many places already. That being said, I thought I'd share this with you all and hopefully you will share with me the places (of this list) you have been too and what you thought of them. Let me know in the comments.
